OUTLINE

The energy sector is key to tackling climate change and achieving the 1.5° target. According to IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook 2022, employment in the energy sector could grow to 139 million jobs by 2030, with renewables accounting for 38.2 million and other energy transition technologies for 74.2 million, if we stay on track with the 1.5°C pathway.  However, the energy sector displays even more disparities regarding gender equality and equal representation than other economic sectors. Women are severely underrepresented in all professional levels, but especially in decision-making or technical positions, while making half of the affected end users of energy.

The achievement of the 1.5° target will rely significantly on female experts and their contributions. Not only to increase the global talent pool but also to boost efficiency: A growing number of studies indicate that diversity in teams yields better results and more sustainable business choices. To attain this objective, we must dismantle gender-related barriers, necessitating a synergy of both political and economic measures. Hence, dedicated individuals from diverse spheres, with a particular emphasis on government and business, must unite in concerted efforts for a genuinely gender-equal and fair energy transition.

The Women Energize Women initiative’s aim is to empower, motivate, inform, inspire and connect women working in the energy sector across the world by offering interactive events, important information and general knowledge on the state of gender equality in the energy sector. By shedding light on best practices and female role models the initiative unites committed people to work towards a holistic, sustainable and gender equal energy system together.

This networking event is organized in cooperation with Siemens and GWNET. After brief welcoming words, this event aims to bring together dedicated women and allies from government and business for an informal gathering.
