Future Forum Green Hydrogen: Challenging entrenched Power Structures in the Energy Sector – Feminist Foreign Policy as a Key to a Just Transition

This online event will explore the influence of entrenched power structures and related forces of persistence against transformation and discuss how Feminist Foreign Policy approaches can foster more inclusive and equitable decision-making. It will focus on gender-sensitive strategies in energy policies to address the barriers and needs faced by women, girls, and minority groups, while highlighting the relationship between historically evolved power structures, resistance to transitional processes, and transformative decarbonization efforts across sectors. Additionally, the event will mark the launch of a new H2-diplo study, exploring concrete policy recommendations, and practical steps for implementing Feminist Foreign Policy to overcome the influence of structural barriers in energy politics and to decarbonize critical sectors

Questions to be discussed include:

  • How do fossil-fuel-based systems of production and the social conditions created by entrenched power structures influence each other? How do these patterns manifest in current low-carbon energy transition plans, and what are their implications for sustainable and just energy systems?
  • In how far is the empowerment of women and female participation in decision-making processes a critical factor for the success of a just transition and the race to net-zero?
  • How can Feminist Foreign Policy strategies lead to a better incorporation of the needs of women, girls, and marginalized groups in renewable energies, hydrogen and climate change policies?
