BREAKING THE GENDER BARRIERS, BREAKING THE SILOS "Joint Efforts for the Energy Transition within and beyond Wind Energy"

The key to a successful energy transition is integration and diversification. We need a diverse set of talents and perspectives to tackle this great challenge: the global switch to green and sustainable energy.
Nonetheless, women still tend to be underrepresented in the energy sector, especially in decisionmaking and technical positions. According to the “Wind energy: A gender perspective” report by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), women only represent 21% of the overall wind energy workforce, and only 32% in the total renewable energy sector. The sector is far from breaking down gender barriers and integrating a variety of perspectives on the energy sector.
However, it is precisely this diversity in perspectives which addresses an issue as complex and diverse as the energy transition. In fact, the idea of diversification is integral to the entire transition. For a successful transition, energy grids must combine key technologies with new energy sources and find synergies to form a reliable mix of a clean and sustainable energy infrastructure and breaking down the technology silos.
Here, there is a powerful potential to further the energy transition via integration – the integration of all genders into the process as well as the integration of different technologies into the energy system. The synergies of both integration processes are to be explored to enhance the global “Energiewende”.

GUIDING QUESTIONS:

  • What are the barriers to equal representation in the wind and other renewable energy sectors?
  • Which obstacles are sector specific, and which might be rooted in the overall structure of our economic system? How can we overcome this inequality?
  • How can organisations and companies contribute to gender equality in the energy sector?
  • What synergies could be explored between the different renewable energy subsectors to foster a joint energy transition?

The "Women Energize Women" campaign aims to motivate, inspire, empower and connect women who are active in the global energy sector. "Women Energize Women" (#womenenergize) is a communication initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). It is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) within the scope of BMWK’s global project Bilateral Energy Partnerships.
